ALBUM
Press play and it might surprise you. If you’re ready for this meeting it might even like you. Put your headphones on and you’ll hear the pounding, or subtle sound, of a piano, organic
strings, wood, breathing, cracking; a world of sounds so natural, you might think the music is happening in your room and the singer’s voice is getting closer and closer to a whisper in your ear. Julia Marcell’s debut album “It Might Like You” is a collection of stories and, as she describes them herself, “ simple stories, to make sure everyone gets them, but still not too simple, to make sure everyone gets them in a different way.” Musically, classical punk is possibly the best way to describe her style, the sound is raw, yet positive, and it’s not only instruments you hear in the completely live recording, but the musicians’ actual presence in the room.
Funded by 657 people from all over the world, Julia’s album is the first release by a Polish artist through Sellaband.com – a website built on the innovative idea of fans investing in music. Produced by Moses Schneider and recorded in Chez Cherie studio in Berlin, the album features sounds made by singer-songwriter and piano player Julia Marcell, a string quartet of very young musicians from Poland and 4 guest drummers playing sometimes simultaneously. Mixed by Moses Schneider in Transporterraum and mastered by Michael Schwabe at Monoposto, the album captures the same spirit of fun and love of music it was created in.

BIO
My name is Julia and I write songs. I like to call them classical punk - classical because
of my intentions, punk because of the execution. Mostly they are stories - I write them simple
to make sure everyone gets them, but still not too simple to make sure everyone gets them in a different way. These songs-stories are very different from each other, so to balance things out, I like to have modest instrumentation - natural, organic sounds of wood, string, finger hitting a piano key and voice whispering, cracking, breathing - this is the world of sounds that excites me.
As far as my own story goes, in prehistoric era there was just me, a guitar and a big chaos - I wrote 200 songs about it, most of which I have fortunately already forgotten. Making music somehow always seemed the most appealing of all activities, so I was dedicating my time to recording home made demos, then loosing them due to the computer failure and then recording them again.
After some years of fooling around with music software, drum loops and building songs like LEGO, I understood I no longer could live without a piano. I wanted to go back to natural way of making music, the stripped down, more emotional approach. It was around 2006, I had high hopes for studying classical composers, learning from Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, but the first piece of music I ever played on a piano was my own: freshly written piece, influenced by the magic of using a completely new instrument. I knew immediately that something opened in my head, a new horizon in my songwritting. The routine of putting some 3,4 chords together was replaced by the absolute freedom to experiment with the structure of the song, the tempo, the rhythm, the atmosphere...
anything, really. I felt there were no borders anymore, no rules to follow. It was very liberating.
I came across Sellaband.com on a lovely summer day in July 2008. I guess I wanted to go swimming, the sun was shining, it was very hot. The website was promising that I can record an album for 50.000 dollars if only I can find people to invest this money in my music. I already had some recordings - the ep called “Storm” - so I set up an account, uploaded what I had and three months and three days later I had the full sum raised. 657 people from all around the world decided they liked what they heard enough to give me a shot at making more music.
And this is how I found myself in Berlin, with 50k in my pocket, set off to record my debut album with the producer Moses Schneider. I brought some talented string playing friends from Poland, I met some more talented and friendly people, it was an amazing time, working was so fun it didn’t feel like working at all. We recorded the songs live, to capture our performance in all of it’s imperfect beauty, we left all room sounds, squeaking chairs, mistakes and accidents - it’s all there on the album. I had the plan to create something that is not welcoming in an obvious way, but demands attention and rewards repeated listening. I called the record “It might like you”, because it really is like that - if you want to take a listen, you have to get ready for this meeting and leave expectations behind. If you’re open to it, if you let it in, it might really like you.
The epilogue to my story would go like this: I moved to Berlin where I started cooperating
with many wonderful people, played some shows all over Europe and now I’m releasing my debut album in stores, hoping for the best. New ideas come at even greater speed than before and I still find making music the most appealing of all activities. Apart maybe from playing live - hopefully
I never have to choose between the two.

QUOTES
“If I was an a&r-guy at a major recordcompany I would easily consider to sign this girl. She has a lovely personal voice, a very own way of being, a whole basket of cool tunes and not least a very cool way of being in her artistic attitude. All parts you need for a major deal. And why that? Well, as I wrote - the songs are mighty cool and well written. The arrangements with the stringsection and her piano, combined with her sweet and expressive voice is the perfect companion to these songs... And each songs need your attention a lot cause they challenge you as a listener. And the album grows for each listen. This is an album you need to have if you like Tori Amos, Björk, Charlotte
Martin and Kate Bush. This girl is playing in the same league.”
Pär Winberg, Melodic.net, review of “It Might Like You”
“Of the 4,680 hopefuls currently vying for your support [on Sellaband], three worth hearing are Polish Tori Amos type Julia Marcell, rootsy German electro-popster Kirt and emotive London indie-
rockers Trail.”
Chris Salmon, The Guardian
“It was sure that Julia Marcell’s first full-length album will be something spectacular, even if only because of the way it was made. The only question was whether the artist herself will live up to the expectations and record the songs of our dreams. Today I can finally say: it IS spectacular, also on artistic level.”
We Are From Poland about „It Might Like You”
“Stumbling upon your page has been like finding a jewel on the beach. And you just want to yell at the top of your lungs to anyone who can hear, to the wind, to the sea, “LOOK WHAT I FOUND! LOOK WHAT I FOUND!!! It’s sooooooo beautiful!” Your music brought tears to my eyes and in my world, there is no bigger compliment I could give you. Thank you!”
Voltaire
„We have here a very interesting, young artist who has just released a great predictor of her longer work to come. More internet based than Poland based. Unless somebody needs strong support for his/her patriotic feelings, I’m waiting for Julia’s full-length album and I don’t care who’s gonna release it.”
Tomasz Chwastek , kulturaonline.pl about „Storm EP”
“Amongst all the female singer songwriters that are out there at the moment, Julia Marcell is a breath of fresh air. Piano, strings and a haunting voice bring some really beautiful songs to life in a way that a lot of over produced chart acts can only dream of.”
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme about “It Might Like You”
“The three songs here online are the best songs I heard this year so far, not only on SAB, but anywhere.”
Xander Mol, investor on Sellaband about Julia’s songs

It Might Like You

Kategoria: pop polski
Opis: Gra na fortepianie i na skrzypcach. Ma na imię Julia i pisze piosenki. Lubi je nazywać "CLASSICAL-PUNK". Classical z powodu intencji, Punk z powodu wykonania.

Płyta zatytułowana "It Might Like You", powstała w Berlinie z udziałem niemieckich muzyków i polskiego kwartetu smyczkowego. Nagrania wyprodukował niemiecki producent Moses Schneider . Julia tak wspomina pracę nad "It Might Like You": "Udało nam się uchwycić to na czym nam najbardziej zależało, czyli radość grania muzyki. Piosenki były nagrywane na żywo, na tzw. setkę, eksperymentowaliśmy, używaliśmy nietypowych instrumentów jak np. buty albo papier. Wyszła płyta surowa, o punkowej energii, a jednak intymna i ludzka."

Płyta Julii Marcell ukazała się 12 czerwca 2009 na terytorium Niemiec, Austrii i Szwajcarii . Julia obecnie zajmuje sie promocją albumu. Wystąpiła m.in. w kultowym niemieckim programie Rockpalast w telewizji WDR . Pozytywną opinię na temat Julii wyraził nawet brytyjski The Guardian.
Płytę zapowiada utwór " Night Of the Living Dead".
